When does additive beat CNC — and when do you combine them?

Additive wins on complex geometry, speed to first article, and design iterations measured in days instead of weeks. CNC wins on materials, tolerances, and surface finish for end-use hardware. The hybrid workflow — print to prove the design, machine to field it — is often the fastest path from requirement to fielded part, and running both under one roof is the point.

Why does a controlled, traceable AM environment matter?

Because defense customers don't just need a part — they need to prove where it came from. Our AM work runs inside the same ISO 9001:2015 quality system and ITAR-registered, CMMC Level 2 environment as our defense manufacturing, so prints supporting controlled programs come with the documentation trail a program office expects.

What has EOD Gear actually built with additive?

The showcase piece: 3D-printed Luneburg lenses for decoy drones — spherical graded-index radar reflectors whose internal lattice geometry makes a small unmanned aircraft present the radar cross-section of a much larger platform. That geometry cannot be molded or machined; it can only be printed, which is exactly why the part exists here. Beyond that, our own product line leans on additive daily: inert training aids and ordnance replicas, component development for FPV Safe and Arm systems, fixtures and tooling for our CNC cell, and customer prototypes that went on to production.
