Homemade Explosive Desensitizer

This Homemade Explosives Desensitizer is used to reduce the risk created by trace amounts of improvised (HME) explosive material. When teams work around homemade mixtures, training aids, post-blast debris, or contaminated surfaces, microscopic residue can remain on tools, containers, gloves, benches, or sample jars. This desensitizer is formulated to make those small, unavoidable amounts safer to handle and easier to manage.

Military EOD units use HME desensitizers during training evolutions, range operations, exploitation, and evidence handling. Public safety Bomb Squads rely on them whenever they encounter unknown mixtures, degraded energetics, or residue collected during response. Applying a desensitizer reduces the likelihood that friction, heat, or movement can create an unintended reaction.

This product supports general safety, reduces cross-contamination, and adds an important layer of risk-reduction when working around homemade explosives. It is not intended for disposal of bulk material—only for trace amounts and residue remaining after operational handling.

EOD Gear provides HME desensitizer products as part of our broader support to military, federal, state, and local teams working with hazardous and improvised energetic materials. If your unit handles HME during training or real-world missions, this should already be part of your kit.

Homemade Explosive Desensitizer FAQ's

What is an HME desensitizer used for?
It’s used to reduce risk from trace amounts of homemade explosive residue left on tools, containers, PPE, or work surfaces after handling improvised mixtures, training aids, or post-blast debris (See the HME SSE Kit). It is a safety and contamination-control tool—not a disposal method.

Is this product for bulk HME disposal?
No. HME desensitizers are not meant for bulk quantities. They are intended only for small amounts and microscopic residue remaining after operational handling by EOD or Bomb Squad personnel.

Who typically uses an HME desensitizer?
Military EOD units, federal response teams, and local Bomb Squads use desensitizers during training, exploitation, range work, and real-world calls involving homemade explosives or unknown energetic mixtures.

How does desensitizing residue improve safety?
Treating residue reduces the likelihood that friction, heat, or sudden movement could initiate an unintended reaction. It also helps prevent cross-contamination of evidence, tools, and work areas.

Can this be used on training aids?
Yes. Units working with inert or partially active training aids often use desensitizers to control residue on handling tools and storage containers.  See HME Training Kit

Does the desensitizer affect evidence integrity?
No. It is designed to reduce risk without compromising documentation or safe transport of trace materials. Always follow agency SOPs and forensic guidelines.

Is the formula restricted?
Yes. Due to the nature of this product, full specifications are limited. Additional information is available to users with .mil or .gov credentials.

How do we get pricing and procurement options?
