A shield without a viewport is the lighter, cheaper, simpler option, and for a lot of teams it is the right one. The trade is straightforward: you give up the ability to watch the threat through the panel, and you get back four pounds and one less thing to scratch, fog or replace. Teams that use a shield as a mobile barrier rather than a sighting platform usually land here.
What this shield was rated to stop
Level III, compliant with NIJ 0108.01, tested against:
- 7.62x51mm (M80, 147gr at 2,780 fps)
- 7.62x39mm (Chinese and Russian MSC LC)
- 5.56x45mm (M193, in 55, 62 and 77gr)
- 5.45x39mm MSC
Plus all lesser threats, handgun calibers included. Level III is a rifle rating and nothing more. It does not cover steel-core armor-piercing ammunition — that is Level IV, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling rather than advising.
Size and weight
20 x 30 inches, 0.8 inches thick, 12.5 pounds. For comparison, the same panel with a viewport ran 16.5 pounds. Four pounds does not sound like much until it is held at arm's length, one-handed, for the length of a callout. If your team has never timed how long an operator can actually hold a shield in a genuine ready position, do that before choosing a weight class.
Configuration
Available as a straight rectangle or with dual cutouts, with an optional tactical cover. The rectangle gives uninterrupted coverage. The dual cutout clears the firing hand so a pistol can be worked from behind the panel without breaking the shield line. Shape matters more than most buyers expect, because it changes where the shield can be braced and how it rides when moving.

Who we spec shields for
EOD Gear was founded by a former U.S. Navy EOD technician, and we supply law enforcement, SWAT, military and EOD units, along with agencies buying on contract and through GSA. That background is the reason we push back on specs rather than simply quoting what was asked for. A shield that is correctly rated and too heavy to hold is not protection, it is equipment that stays in the vehicle.
Questions we get about shields without viewports
Is a shield without a viewport actually worse?
No, it is different. Without a viewport the operator works from the edge of the panel rather than through it. Many teams prefer that, because edge-work keeps the whole panel intact and the shield lighter. It is a tactics decision, not a quality decision.
How much weight does a viewport add?
On this panel, four pounds: 12.5 without, 16.5 with. Expect a similar order of magnitude on current builds, though it varies with panel size and glazing.
Will Level III stop armor-piercing rifle rounds?
No. Level III covers the common rifle threats listed above. Steel-core AP such as .30-06 M2 AP is a Level IV conversation, and Level IV shields carry a serious weight penalty. Tell us what you are actually planning against and we will be straight about where the line falls.
Rectangle or dual cutout?
Dual cutout if your operator needs to run a pistol from behind the shield. Rectangle if you want maximum uninterrupted coverage and intend to work from the edge.
Can lighting be added later?
It can, but specify it at quote time rather than retrofitting. Mount position affects balance, and balance is what determines how long the shield can actually be held.
