The number one question to ask when considering your ballistic shield is, "What is my primary threat?" Maybe your primary threat is 9mm giving you more protection that a non-ballistic riot shield. A pistol-rated police shield gives you protection at a lower price.
If you are more likely to run against rifle threats, shields that stop AR and AK rounds may be the perfect shield solution as this type of shield stops all pistol rounds.
In some cases you may want to look at ballistic protection that stops multiple hits from larger caliber rifles such as a .308 or .30-06. Lightweight shields come in a variety of shapes and sizes as well.
Other considerations include the weight of the shield and the ability of the officer to carry it over extended periods of time.
Will the shield be carried in all cruisers or will only the patrol sergeant carry the shield for that shift?
Budget restraints are real and will be a major factor toward the final decision. Do you go with a less expensive/lower protection level or fewer lighter weight and stronger shield used by SWAT Teams the best route?
